Construction projects will affect campus traffic
in January

Breaking News Staff

Two high-profile construction projects will affect campus traffic as students, faculty and staff return to UH for the spring semester.

At Entrance 1, construction on the new $25.8 million parking garage began Dec. 20. About 450 student parking spaces were lost when the north end of Parking Lot 1A, located at the corner of Calhoun Road and Entrance 1, closed.

The loss of those spaces will be offset by the addition of more than 450 spaces around campus: about 260 in Lot 4A on Wheeler Avenue and around 200 in Lot 8A on Cullen Boulevard.

The parking garage should open in spring 2006, officials said.

On the other side of campus, the construction of exterior walls on the Science and Engineering Research Classroom Complex will close part of Entrance 14 a week after classes begin.

The work was scheduled to begin during the winter break and be complete by the beginning of classes, but a manufacturer's error caused the project to be delayed, Associate Vice President for Plant Operations Dave Irvin said in a release.

The north lane of Entrance 14 near the building will be closed until March 1. Metered parking along Entrance 14 will also be closed, Irvin said.
