before conference play

Cougar Sports Services

The UH women's basketball team picked up its eighth loss of the season Friday, falling victim to Charlotte 80-71 at Hofheinz Pavilion.

A victory slipped away from the Lady Cougar's paws despite a 32-28 halftime lead over the Lady 49ers. UH would push that lead to as many as six in the second half, but that lead vanished as Charlotte's Whitney Hoey propelled the 49ers to a 21-5 run that put the Lady 49ers in the driver's seat.

Sha'Ratta Hawkins managed 14 points and eight rebounds in her last outing, and she will attempt to lead the Lady Cougars to their first victory in Conference USA.

UH managed to muster a 14-5 run, putting them within striking distance at 62-59 with just under four minutes left to play.

The 49ers' Sakellie Daniels helped Charlotte ensure a victory down the stretch, scoring six points in the final two minutes.

Houtons's Tye Jackson led the Lady Cougars with 22 points, followed by Sha'Ratta Hawkins with14 and Nakazi Glover with 12. Jackson also registered nine rebounds, while Hawkins pulled down eight boards.

Charlotte's Hoey had a game-high 27 points, while teammate Pam Brown recorded a double double with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

The Lady Cougars will begin Conference USA play against Central Florida (2-10, 0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Golden Knights are coming off a 61-50 loss to C-USA rival Southern Miss, who will meet Houston at 2 p.m. Jan. 8 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
