It's almost time for Cougar Kickoff. The fall semester is approaching us and with it comes a whole new season of University of Houston football and volleyball. Our athletes have been practicing hard and are prepared for the season's games. Are you ready?
Well, to be sure that you are, the 1996-1997 Council of Campus Leaders has been working hard this summer to present the 1996 athletes to you on Aug. 28 at Cougar Kickoff '96. The event has been at UH for a number of years as a way for the students to cheer for the Cougars as they begin the season and a new year of NCAA athletics.
This year, Cougar Kickoff promises to be fun and exciting, with good food, beer (if you are 21 or older) or soft drinks, music, activities and, of course, a chance to meet this year's athletes. Students will also be able to participate in a banner contest that will be judged prior to the event.
Everyone is invited to participate. All the banners will be displayed in the University Center before the first football game. There will also be a spirit competition at the event to see who has the most spirit. Prizes will be given for those loyal Cougars who can sing the fight song the fastest.
If you don't know the Cougar yells, fight song or the Alma Mater, this is your chance to learn them before you go to the games. They are posted in the Cougar Den, which is on the first floor of the UC, next to Coog's Cafe.
Conference USA is a new beginning for our teams and another step in our history. We have a chance to repeat history. In 1976, we entered the Southwest Conference and went on to become the SWC Champions in football. Then, we went on to win the Cotton Bowl. The season before that, the football team had a losing record and it was predicted that the Cougars would not win many games in the SWC. We proved all the non-believers wrong.
We have the same chance this year, and there is no reason we can't repeat history. So mark it in your calendars to come out to Lynn Eusan Park on Aug. 28 to Cougar Kickoff and cheer for your Houston Cougars as they go on to victory.
