Freshman Quad resident dies Sunday

Cougar News Services

Freshman music major Tommy Runion died Sunday afternoon after being discovered unconscious in his Quadrangle residence hall room.

Runion, 18, was given CPR after a call for assistance brought paramedics to his room at 2:50 p.m. Sunday, according to UH Police Lt. R. Byars. He was then taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:44 p.m.

Pharmacy freshman Freddy Wilson, a friend of Runion's, went with Runion to the hospital. He called Runion "really generous" and said friends and family were his top priority.

Runion, who Wilson said was a gifted opera singer, lived in Bates Hall with his brother Joe, who placed the emergency call Sunday.

A memorial service for Runion was held on campus Tuesday evening.
