Cougar golf in Top 10

The Cougar golf team will start the year off in the top 10 in the nation, right where it left off a year ago.

The MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings have placed the Coogs sixth in the nation entering the 1998-99 golf season. Coach Mike Dirks' squad finished the 1997-98 season fifth in the poll after an eighth-place finish in the NCAA Championships.

Houston opens up the season next weekend in Johnson City, Tenn., with The Ridges Intercollegiate, one of the toughest tournaments in the nation. Eight other Top 25 teams will join the Cougars at The Ridges.

UH's golf history is unchallenged by any other. It includes an unprecedented 16 national titles, all under legendary coach Dave Williams.
