Football off and running
|Football off and
By Josh Gajewski
When you hear the voice of wide receiver Jerrian James carrying across the UH Practice Fields and witness the constant helmet slapping assistant coach Bradley Peveto enthusiastically assesses on his cornerbacks, it can only mean one thing -- football is in the air.
The UH football team (7-4 in 1999) opened up spring practice Wednesday under the watchful eye of new head coach Dana Dimel, while a sense of renewed excitement seemed to fill the air. James in particular had good reason for optimism. The senior, who was redshirted in 1999 after suffering a broken leg, looked to be back at full strength.
Other interesting tidbits from the first day of drills was the new look, sported by running back Leif Penn, who switched his number from 27 to 21. The latter number was his high school number back in Florida and was previously worn by UH's Scott Regimbald, who is graduating.
Texas transfer Chris Robertson also looked impressive, but will not be able to take the field when play begins in September due to transfer guidelines set by the NCAA.
Dimel's no-nonsense workouts will continue through April 14, with the
annual Red and White game to be held April 15. Practices run every Monday,
Wednesday and Friday and are open to the public.
