Ruggiano joins swim team

Cougar Sports Information

Danielle Ruggiano, a freestyle/IM sprinter from Delaware, has enrolled at UH and will join the swim team for the 1999-2000 season. Ruggiano, a native of Newark, was a multiple state champion in the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley at Glasgow High School.

"Danielle is a good athlete and we're excited about her joining the team," said swimming head coach Ginger Hurley. "She's very versatile and can be a factor in a lot of different events."

The Cougar swim team opens its 1999-2000 season Oct. 29 at LSU.

UH Football Notes

Senior defensive end Ahmad Charles has come a long way in his years at UH. After playing in 11 games as a true freshman in 1995, the Cleveland, Texas, native was one of the up-and-coming stars of the Cougar defense.

The next season proved to be the test of all tests for Charles. After helping the Cougars defeat Sam Houston State in the season opener, he was involved in a car accident that knocked him out of the season with a knee injury.

The long road back began in 1997, as Charles saw limited action in 11 games, and the trend continued the following year.

In this, his final season as a Cougar, Charles has worked his way into the starting lineup, and Saturday night, his hard work paid off. Not only did Charles have a helping hand in stopping the Rice running attack, but he also lent his skills to the Cougar scoring when he picked up a Jeremy Bates fumble and ran 66 yards for his first career touchdown.

For Charles, it was an exclamation point to his long road back.
