HAO accepting nominations for excellent faculty

Cougar News Staff

History professor Lawrence Curry has one. So do political science professor Ross Lence, law professor Sidney Buchanan, hotel and restaurant management professor Agnes DeFranco and architecture professor Dietmar Froehlich.

They are just a few of the UH professors who have received the Houston Alumni Organization's Outstanding Faculty Award, which recognizes faculty members who "excel in both teaching and in building a sense of community among students."

The HAO is now accepting nominations for this year's awards, which will be given to one faculty member from each of the University's 14 colleges. The $1,000 awards, presented at the HAO's annual meeting, highlight recipients' accomplishments and contributions to the University.

Any faculty member, administrator, student or alumnus may nominate someone for this year's awards. Nominees must have been full-time faculty members at UH for at least three years and must now hold the rank of assistant professor, associate professor or professor.

Nominees must have the intent of continuing as a faculty member for the next academic year and should exhibit a consistent pattern of teaching excellence and student service -- as an adviser or participant in student or alumni programs, for example.

To nominate someone for the awards, submit a one- to three-page letter including the nominee's name, department, college, telephone number and e-mail address; a detailed explanation of why the nominee should be considered for the award (including teaching evaluations, number and type of courses taught, personal and academic impact on students, contributions to the teaching program, and community outreach); your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, major and graduation year (if applicable); and any other relevant information.

The nomination must be accompanied by two letters of reference, one of which must be written by a currently enrolled UH student.

Send nominations to the Houston Alumni Organization, Attention: Faculty Awards Committee, P.O. Box 230345, Houston, 77223-0345. For more information, call (713) 743-9550 or e-mail tram@uh.edu

The nomination deadline is April 28.
