January 27 in history: A flash fire during an evening practice launch claims the lives of Apollo 1 astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee. The fire shut down the Saturn program and caused a complete redesign of the booster section (1967); Dumb and Dumber, starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, opens in movie theaters (1995). Birthdays: author Lewis Carroll (1832), physiologist and Nobel prize winner Sir John Carew Eccles (1903), actress Bridget Fonda (1964), composer/musician Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756) and actress Mimi Rogers (1956).
