UH takes on the No. 1 Rice Owls at 7 p.m.
today in Game 3 of the five-game Silver Glove Series at Cougar Field.
After opening Conference USA play with
a sweep of preseason conference favorite Southern Miss, 4-2, 6-0, 4-3,
UH took top-billing in the C-USA rankings as the only team to kick off
the conference season 3-0.
The young Cougars plan to take the upper
hand tonight, as they are tied with crosstown rival Rice 1-1 for the Silver
Rice returned to the top of the national
rankings as it opened Western Athletic Conference play against San Jose
State with a three-game sweep of its own, 6-5, 6-3, 11-7. An SJS error
gave the Owls the win on Friday as relief-pitcher Andy Cook walked in a
Rice score in the ninth on a 3-2 count with the bases loaded.
The Owls faced Baylor at 7 p.m. Tuesday
at Reckling Park.
UH dropped its first meeting with the Owls
on a pitching error of its own as Rice's Phillip Ghutzman knocked a grand
slam out of the park for the 5-2 win on Feb. 13. The Cougars' next meeting
with Rice was more favorable, as they massacred the No. 1 team, 14-5, at
its own Reckling Park.
Sophomore catcher Chris Snyder hit a three-run
homer in the meeting, finishing the day three-for-four with 5 RBI. Lefty
pitcher Keith Whatley picked up the win.
Several Cougars have stepped up to the
plate this season. Snyder leads the club with 23 RBI and a 61.5 slugging
percentage for the year, followed by junior transfer Josh Snook with 21
RBI and a 56.6. Snyder has a 44.9 on-base percentage, while Snook has hit
the bag 42.5 percent of time so far this season.
