Crystal J. Doucette
The Lady Cougar volleyball team eighty-sixed the North Carolina Charlotte 49ers in Thursday's match between the two Conference USA foes in Halton Arena, Charlotte, N.C.
UH took the 49ers in three games -- 15-2, 15-4, 15-7 -- as it held on to its top spot in the National Division with a 4-0 in conference. UNC-Charlotte is now 6-8 overall, 1-3 C-USA, Saint Louis handing over the 49ers only conference win.
Senior rightside hitter Jennifer Wittenburg, No. 2 in the nation in kills per game (as of Sept. 24), led the Cougars with 14 kills and a .235 hitting percentage. Her stats for the night include 14 digs for the match.
Senior outside hitter Bobbi Stewart killed 10 out of 19 for a .421 percentage, and junior outside Gabriela Carbone picked up 10 digs.
The 49ers were held to only 19 kills for the entire match, exactly half of the Cougars' share. Freshman outside Chanda Waller killed six of 10 attempts and no errors, earning a .600 for the night.
UH leads the all-time series 6-0 against the 49ers. Its overall record is now 10-3.
The Cougars will play at home again Saturday in Hofheinz Pavilion against the Texas Longhorns. UH fell to the 'Horns last year 3-0 in Austin. However, for the first time in Texas history, the volleyball team dropped out of the USA Today/AVCA top 25 poll on Monday, Sept. 11. after its first-ever 1-4 start, including a loss in its own invitational, the Longhorn Classic.
First serve is set for 3 p.m.
