More closures on I-45

Northbound lanes will close Saturday; work may be completed by March

Cougar News Services

Beginning this weekend, motorists headed north on Interstate 45 downtown will no longer be able to laugh at their southbound brethren.

Work on the northbound side of the freeway is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Saturday -- meaning both sides of the road will be under construction at once. Until now, only the southbound lanes had been affected.

On Saturday evening, all lanes of I-45 northbound will close at Highway . The two left lanes of the freeway will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday. After about a month, the right lanes will open and the left lanes will close. The entire project could be finished in March.

While the northbound lanes are under construction, motorists may reach I-45 North from downtown via Travis or North Main streets. The entrances to I-45 from Walker Street and St. Joseph's Parkway will also be closed.

The exit from I-45 northbound to Houston Avenue and Memorial Drive will be closed until construction is completed, but the exit to Allen Parkway could open again in less than a month.

Motorists who use I-45 northbound to reach the Katy Freeway may detour via Louisiana Street, which ends in a ramp to I-10 West, or by using Studemont or Waugh/Heights west of downtown.

Other downtown highway construction includes a new ramp from Chartres and Runnels streets near Enron Field to I-10 westbound, which will open Monday.
