Pakhalina heads to NCAA

Houston sophomore diver Yulia Pakhalina
will travel to Austin this weekend to defend her NCAA national championships.

Sophomore Yulia Pakhalina
will compete at the 2002 NCAA Championships March 21-23 in Austin.
Pakhalina, a native of Penza, Russia,
won the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events in 2001 at the NCAA tournament,
and is returning to defend them.
Competition will begin today and continues
through Saturday at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Pakhalina will compete
in the 1-meter and 3-meter events.
Pakhalina has never lost a collegiate diving
competition, winning 36 consecutive events. She wins by an average of more
than 75 points in the 1-meter event and
more than 118 points in the 3-meter.
Pakhalina's latest victories were at the
NCAA Zone D Diving Qualifier in Fayetteville, Ark., where she scored 336.00
points in the 1-meter and 655.75 in the 3-meter
event. No other diver scored more than
300 or 600 points, respectively.
Pakhalina was also honored as C-USA Diver
of the Year and Diver of the Meet, and received five C-USA Diver of the
Houston's diving coach Jane Figueiredo
joined Pakhalina on the podium as the C-USA Diving Coach of the Year.
Pakhalina will begin with the 1-meter event,
which will start at approximately 7 p.m. on Thursday. The 3-meter event
will begin at about 7 p.m. on Saturday.
