Smith to testify before Texas House of Representatives

Cougar News Services

UH System Chancellor and UH President Arthur K. Smith will testify before the Texas House of Representatives' Joint Interim Committee on
Higher Education Excellence Funding at 10 a.m. today.

Smith will address excellence funding and how UH will use its funds. The funds are being used to attract and retain top faculty and
researchers.

Lt. Gov. Bill Ratliff and House Speaker Pete Laney appointed the committee in September 2001 to study higher education excellence funding
and the use of private activity bonds.

The committee, co-chaired by State Sen. Steve Ogden and State Rep. Robert Junell, is charged with making recommendations relating to
the structure and requirements for using higher education excellence funding in Texas.

The committee is also reviewing current higher education funding formulas and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's
procedures and recommendations regarding current formulas.

Smith's testimony will be available via Web cast at www.house.state.tx.us/audio/livecmte.htm.
