The No. 4-seeded UH women's tennis team defeated No. 13 seed Charlotte in the first round of the Conference USA championships Thursday. The Cougars took down the 49ers 4-3. Two three-set victories helped propel the Cougars past Charlotte and into the second round of the Conference USA championships in Fort Worth.

The win raises the Cougars' record this season to 10-11.

Playing at the No. 1 spot, junior Jen Baccarani beat Charlotte's Lauren Swain 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.

Senior Jo Keene also prevailed in three sets, winning 6-1, 0-6, 6-3 over Alice Hansen. Keene was playing at the No. 2 position.

Junior Analia Longoni, at No. 3, had just won the first set 6-0 when Charlotte's Jana Cucciniello was forced to withdraw.

Senior Kailey Meisinger, at the No. 4 spot, won a marathon match over Jennifer Hatch 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Freshman Kandace Ridgeway, playing at the No. 5 spot, fell to Lauren Hastings 6-3, 6-0 in straight sets.

Baccarani and Keene, teaming up at the No. 1 spot, could not defeat the 49ers Hansen and Swain, falling 8-5 in the match.

Meisinger and Longoni were leading Hastings and Hatch 6-5 when play was stopped. Houston had already secured the dual match victory.

The Cougars will face No. 5 seed Tulane at noon today.
