Senior tennis ace Sarah Borwell will represent
UH in a national tournament in Los Angeles the week beginning Monday.
The native of Middlesbrough, England, currently
ranked No. 28 in the country in women's tennis singles, will join an elite
field at the Riviera All-American
The C-USA first-team All-Conference singles
player will pre-qualify for the meet Saturday and Sunday, when the field
will be narrowed to 64 players.
To qualify to play for the singles title,
Borwell must win four matches during the qualifying round to make it to
the 32-player "Main Draw."
The kinesiology major, whose mother is
a tennis coach, arrived at UH after spending a year at Rice University.
"I chose the University of Houston because
the school has an excellent tennis team," Borwell said.
Borwell's career goal is to be a professional
tennis player. The tournament in Los Angeles offers the Cougar star the
opportunity to demonstrate her talents
in front of the tennis world.
In 1998-99, Borwell was named C-USA Second
Team All-Conference and went 15-9 against players from the Southwest region.
She won six straight
matches in the 128-field Southwest Regional
before losing in the finals to Tara Reid of Arkansas.
Borwell will rejoin her teammates in Houston
from Oct. 12 to 14 for the Cougar Fall Tennis Classic.
