Cougars slam dunk on

When the Lady Cougar basketball team hits
the court this season, it will be surfing the airwaves of radio station
KGBC-AM into the homes of UH women's
The UH Athletics Department announced that
KGBC Radio 1540 will broadcast 22 games during the Lady Cougars' season,
including all 14 home
The radio contract represents a giant step
forward for the Lady Cougar basketball program. This is the first season
that Lady Cougar games will be
broadcast over the airwaves to fans since
the inception of UH women's basketball.
Leon Blum and C. B. Devoy will call the
Lady Cougar play-by-play and perform the game analysis on the radio.
"This is just a natural progression for
the success of our women's basketball program," said Chris Burkhalter,
associate athletics director for
communications at UH. "Coach (Joe) Curl
has done a great job in elevating the status of Lady Cougar basketball
and it's only natural that we as an athletic
department reach out to those fans who
want to listen to Lady Cougar games on the radio."
The three tournaments Houston will participate
in this season, as well as the annual Conference USA Tournament scheduled
for March 1 to 4 in Chicago,
will not be broadcast.
"This is only the beginning of a successful
relationship between the University of Houston and KGBC," Burkhalter said.
KGBC-AM 1540 serves as an affiliation for
national stations such as ABC News, TSN News, ESPN Radio, Texas Ranger
baseball and Texas and Texas
The station broadcasts a wide range of
athletic events and games from college to the pros, including the NFL,
Major League Baseball, NBA and NASCAR
as well as Houston-area high school football.
