The much-anticipated U.S.-led military
response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks began Sunday with massive bombing
strikes against numerous targets in Afghanistan, the country where suspected
terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden operates from under the protection
of its fundamentalist Islamic regime, the Taliban.
It is one of only three Cabinet positions
created by the U.S. Constitution, and the scope of its powers is broad.
Yet the office of the Secretary of the Treasury
(which has under its purview matters as
life-and-death as the protection of the President and as seemingly arcane
as foreign exchange rates) is one that is
often misunderstood by the public.
