Kanomwan: cheap Thai treats

In the search for cheap, good food in the Houston area, we turn to a little restaurant located not far from UH's main campus.

Located at 1011 Telephone Rd., the Kanomwan restaurant is home to some of the best Asian cuisine in the area.

Kanomwan's specialty is Thai food, as the modest sign outside attests. The meals are served on elegant tableware, a small attention to detail that
is missed in the eating. The menu lists the Thai names for dishes, but also a handy numbering scheme for those of us not brave enough to try to
pronounce them.

While the specialties of the house are spicy, there are some mild varieties of food and veggie dishes as well. The tamest meal my group tried
was HS6, the Goong Pad Prig Phoa. It includes shrimp with cashews in a curry sauce that's more sweet than it is spicy. For those who aren't into
shrimp, a chicken version is available.

On the adventurous side is S3, the Tom Ka Gai. This is a Thai soup, chicken in a broth with lemon grass and lime, and spicy enough to make it

For the stout-hearted, one of the house's strongest dishes is S10, Gang Ped. It's very similar to Tom Ka Gai in taste, but the curry is much more
apparent and makes the dish much hotter than most of the menu.

Let's not forget the appetizers and drinks. Standard soda fare applies of course, but there's also Cha Yen, a sweetish strong tea with cream that's
pretty good.

For appetizers, there's only one way to go: egg rolls. Kanomwan's egg rolls are light, with veggies and multiple varieties of noodles. They're fried
up perfectly and served with a spicy sauce.

Kanomwan's prices are also easy on the wallet: the egg rolls were $1.95 for an order of two, and the basic meals like S3 are $6.95. Meals with
fish involved can reach $10.95, but that's not too bad. There's also a luncheon special on weekdays.

Kanomwan is open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Monday through Friday for lunch, and for dinner from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
