Coogs spend Mardi Gras at LSU
By Geronimo Rodriguez
The Cougar softball team is headed to Louisiana to kick off its Spring Break. But instead of stopping for a New Orleans-style Mardi Gras celebration, the bus will hit the brakes in Baton Rouge for the Louisiana State Tournament.
So while they can put aside the books and class notes for a week, the Cougars will throw on the softball jerseys and work on improving a 6-8 record. Despite having to play on the road during the break, the Cougars are also scheduled for two games against No. 8-ranked LSU.
The team, which posted a lackluster 1-3 record in last weekendis Houston Invitational, begin tournament play with a doubleheader against Southern Miss (5-6) at noon today.
If the Cougars hope to get above .500 in the wins column, they will have to string together a couple of strong efforts on the mound. The pitching staff, namely juniors Jenny Johnson and Jamie Falco and freshman Crystal Briscoe, holds a 2.02 ERA.
Sophomore Jeanie Davis has powered the Cougar offense with a team-leading .429 batting average.
An LSU-UH match-up will cap the first doubleheader at 2 p.m. Jackson State (3-9) and LSU (11-4) are slated to face UH in the doubleheader on Saturday.
