"We've been trying to do something with the Rockets and Comets for several years," said Neal Farmer, event coordinator and former Houston Chronicle sports writer. "The hook we finally found was Guy V. Lewis. We thought we could do a banquet for Guy even if the Rockets and Comets didn't come on board."
Though the Rockets and Comets will be present, Farmer said 50 percent of the people attending the event will be there because of the plan to convince voters that Lewis should be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Each person attending will be given a postcard to fill out and miniature red-and-white polka dot towels to wave. The proceedings will be taped and mailed to voters along with the postcards.
The dinner begins at 7 p.m. at the JW Marriott Ballroom on 5150 Westheimer. Tickets are $40 each and can be purchased by calling the Houston Athletic Committee at 281-754-4687.
