Cougars leave Hawaii without losing streak

The Cougar volleyball team ended its two-week losing skid by defeating the St. Maryis Gaels in four sets, 30-26, 22-30, 30-22, 30-25 in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday.
Led by senior middle hitter Jenny Tannebergeris 15 kills, 12 digs and six blocks, the Cougars were able to rebound from a loss to No. 2 Hawaii on Friday. Senior outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek and sophomore outside hitter Laura Koster added 13 kills and one ace each.
Senior setter Donna Sellen added 46 assists and eight kills; sophomore middle hitter Loure Dews added eight blocks and a match-winning kill; and freshman libero Jaci Gonzalez contributed 14 digs.
With the win the Cougars improve to 8-4 on the season. UH leads the series against St. Maryis 3-0.
Friday, the Cougars saw their losing streak hit four consecutive matches when it lost in three sets to the Rainbow Wahine 30-17, 30-17, 30-20. The Cougars rarely challenged during the match, hitting a season-low .044 percentage to Hawaiiis .435.
The Cougars next head to Waco to play Baylor on Wednesday. The team then returns to Hofheinz Pavilion where it will begin Conference USA competition against Tulane on Oct. 4 and Southern Miss on Oct 5.
