DVDs bring home award-winning hits
By Geronimo Rodriguez
Whatis entertainment without Woody Allen?
The whacky-haired, bespectacled comedian made being neurotic funny. With numerous awards and respect within the film industry, heis proven to be quite a filmmaker as well.
And the recent DVD set, Woody Allen Gift Set 3, which was released today, is an example of his craftsmanship.
The set includes Broadway Danny Rose (1984), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), A Midsummer Nightis Sex Comedy (1982), The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), Radio Days (1987) and Zelig (1983).
The cast of the six films may read like a whois who (or considering that the films are dated it might be something more along the lines of ‘who was whoi), but thatis just Allen doing his thing. Even today, the filmmaker is known for filling the screen with prominent faces.
In these films, movie buffs will see Diane Keaton, Gene Wilder, Burt Reynolds, Mariel Hemingway, Meryl Streep, Lynn Redgrave and, of course, Woody Allen.
Allen earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for Broadway Danny Rose and Purple Rose of Cairo, and won and Oscar for Best Screenplay for his effort in Hannah and Her Sisters.
Allen, who writes all of his scripts, was nominated for Best Screenplay for Radio Days and Broadway Danny Rose as well.
Switching gears a bit, another DVD that has a place on any collectoris shelf is the recently released DVD version of Alfonso Cuaronis Y Tu Mama, Tambien (And Your Mother, Too).
Starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna and Maribel Verdu, the racy film follows two adolescents as they take an older woman for a ride, thinking sheill satisfy their prepubescent dreams. As it turns out, the boys end up on their knees, fulfilling her ignored desires.
Aside from Tu Mama, Garcia has made a few commercials, but the talented actor will surely explode in the coming years. His latest film, El Crimen de Padre Amaro, is set for a Nov. 15 release.
Cuaron, whose efforts landed him at the helm of the third installment of the Harry Potter series, caused quite a stir when releasing this film.
But the filmis daring attributes may just be the graphic sex scenes; Cuaron also hits hard on reality and the way todayis teens can quickly get absorbed in having sex and using drugs behind their parentsi backs.
Upon its release in Mexico, teens were ditching school to see the film. Two teens even protested by taking off their clothes until they were admitted in the film.
For viewers who donit like having othersi hands over their eyes, the DVD version is unrated and contains everything the director wanted viewers to see.
And the list goes on
Melissa Etheridge (Live and Alone), Barenaked Ladies, Sports Night (The Complete Boxed Series Set), Babylon 5 (The Complete First Season), Band of Brothers and Spider-Man have also recently been released.
