UH employees donate nearly $147, 000 to charity
By Andrew Fritsch
UH employees donated to charity in record amounts this year, bringing in $146,745 through the State Employees Charitable Campaign.
The previous record, set in 2000, was $126,000. Last yearis donations totaled $106,000.
The SECC is a statewide program that benefits the United Way by allowing full-time, benefits-eligible state employees to make tax-deductible donations.
Of the approximately 4,200 employees at UH eligible to participate, 1,107 donated to the SECC about a 24 percent participation, said Oscar Gutierrez, director of University advancement projects.
Brandy Walker, the United Wayis local SECC liaison, said UHis main campus had a good participation rate compared to other schools. UH-Downtown and UH-Clear Lake had 10 and 28 percent participation rates, respectively.
As of now, the demographic information for who donated is not available, but will be after all donations are tabulated, Gutierrez said.
Approximately 60 UH employee volunteers helped with the campaign, serving as unit coordinators that facilitated the donation process, Gutierrez said.
The goal for next year is to have a unit coordinator for every department, he said.
Though the campaign officially ended Nov. 22, donations will still be accepted through Dec. 31, Gutierrez said. The official donation total will be available at the beginning of 2003.
Donations can be arranged by contacting a unit coordinator
or Mary Myles at 713-743-0945.
