Senior wins DOW again
Cougar Sports Services
If she keeps it up, Yulia Pakhalina may close out her UH career with a seemingly endless streak of awards.
The senior diver was named Conference USA Diver of the Week for the second consecutive week. It was the fourth time she has won the award this season and the ninth career DOW award.
It is the fifth DOW award for the swimming and diving team and the seventh time a Cougar has earned either a DOW or Swimmer of the Week award this season. Freshman diver Azul Almazan won a DOW on Nov. 19. Freshman swimmer Stacey Williams earned two SOW awards, one on Oct. 22 and one Nov. 19. In total, UH divers have won the DOW awards for five consecutive weeks.
Pakhalina earned the award after dominating the competition against Louisiana State on Saturday. The senior breezed through the one- and three-meter events, scoring 377.03 points in the one-meter and 337.20 points in the three-meter. She was the only diver to break the 300-point barrier in both events. The dual meet against LSU was the final home event of the season.
Pakhalina has won 54 of the 56 collegiate evens in which she has competed, including 27 consecutive wins in the three-meter event. She is the defending NCAA Three-Meter Diving National Champion and is the NCAA One-Meter Diving National Runner-Up. She swept the NCAAs in 2001.
The Cougars will head to the Metroplex this weekend. UH faces Texas Christian at 7 p.m. Friday in Fort Worth and Southern Methodist at 1 p.m. Saturday in Dallas.
