Flashback to retro '80s at downtown nightclub Spy
By Gigi Khadivian
If you have been paying any attention to the news lately, you are bound to have heard Club Spyis name in the mix. The downtown club, which opened its doors in 1997, was one of the first establishments opened to help spark downtownis new facelift.
Recently, though, the club has been struggling with a barrage of bad press. In September, federal authorities seized the club after the owners were allegedly involved in an ecstasy ring, in November there was a shootout involving a drug dealer, and most recently there was another shootout with police officers.
Wednesday nights at Spy make for a different story from the one you hear on the news every week. You wonit find gun-toting gangsters on this night, but you will find the cheapest cover.
After the ecstasy bust, understandably, attendance at the club went down, so to help get people back into Spy thereis no cover on Wednesdays. Yes, folks, i80s night is free and with perks.
Trash Bash has been the most happening glam party for well over a year now, because of the fashionably dressed people, the great music and the amazing drink specials. Twenty-one-and-uppers can enjoy Wednesday night $1 drink specials on wells and draft. Now thatis a perk. Located at 112 Travis Street, in the heart of downtown, Wednesday night is the ultimate i80s trash bash with longtime Houston DJ Mike Snow upstairs and Patrick Conner downstairs on the wheels of steel. This multi-room, state-of-the-art club has two rooms, VIP lounges and a 3,000-square-foot deck for all the i80s you could possibly want.
Decorated to heighten the atmosphere, the walls are adorned with posters from movies like Pretty in Pink and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Unlike Asian Night on Saturdays, Wednesdayis i80s Trash Bash is a totally different crowd of scenesters, requesting anything from Salt ini Pepais "Push It" to Front 242is "Headhunter" or Soft Cellis "Tainted Love."
This is the place to be if you love black eyeliner, blue eye shadow and getting dolled up. Most of those reading this probably donit even remember the time when black was the color, leg warmers were in, Atari was the game and Madonna ruled the music scene. But you can still step into Spy and be transported to a time when you could yell "Hey, Mickey, youire so fine" in the middle of the dance floor.
112 Travis Street
The verdict: Trash Back Wednesdays at Spy is the happenini-est
i80s glam party in Houston.
