Nantz speaks to UH scholars
by Christian Schmidt
The Daily Cougar
While much of the campus was focused on Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. John Kerry's rally on campus Thursday, a small group of students were honored for their hard work with scholarships from the School of Communication. The event's keynote speaker was Jim Nantz, CBS Sports lead anchor and UH alumnus. Nantz graduated with a degree in broadcasting in 1981.
Nantz discussed his career, including his beginnings while still in school. As a junior, he began doing reporting for free for local radio stations. Then-UH men's head basketball coach Guy V. Lewis asked Nantz to host his weekly show; three months later, Nantz became the third sports anchor for KHOU television.
Nantz was asked what could be done to strengthen UH's communication program.
"I wish I had more knowledge of the day-in, day-out operations here," Nantz said. "But I would say use the local resources of this market. I am amazed that the best communications schools in the country aren't in the biggest markets."
The 22 students given scholarships are Lauren Beeson,
Ward Booth, Angela Cornett, Kimberly Crocker, Dustin Hatfield, Christine
Kiss, Louis Kubiak, Jasmine Majkowski, Emike Nasamu-Odior, Corinne O'Brien,
Troy O'Grady, Jigna Patel, Maranda Pleasant, Jennifer Roasa, Rachael Seeley,
