About this time every year, people start reminding us
of the "real" reason for the season. They warn against being swept up in
the corporate-sponsored world of consumerism. What's so wrong with consumerism?
The story of a baby in a manger is just a convenient, perverted version
of pagan winter solstice celebrations. The real reason for the season is
the need for excitement during the depressing winter months.
Solicitors don't belong on campus
At many universities -- especially ours -- people who
have no desire to learn or teach pop on and off campus. They come here
with bad intentions: They want to make money or change studentsi minds.
A lot to be thankful for ater
It's a few days after Thanksgiving, and the glow of family
and huge meals is just beginning to wear off. With a bit of hindsight,
it's time to be thankful for the things we have, and I know I have much
for which to be thankful.
