Coogs lose another to DePaul

UH fails to muster offense against Blue Demons in sweep

Cougar Sports Services

The Cougars absorbed their third consecutive loss Wednesday, falling 5-1 to DePaul to bring their record to 18-14 overall and 3-3 in Conference USA.

DePaul, who defeated the Cougars in the C-USA Tournament championship game a year ago, took the 1-0 advantage in the third inning when left fielder Dana Kenney reached first, stole second and was able to score on third baseman Jenny Doezie's single up the middle.

Cougar junior Brandi Clark responded in the fifth, inning tying the score after reaching base on a double to right center and home off an RBI single by teammate senior Jeanie Davis.

With two innings left to play, DePaul took a greater advantage when it added three more runs in the sixth when center field Linda Secka doubled and allowed pinch runner Marcy Wilus to score. Secka and shortstop Jessica Evans later scored after a UH error.

DePaul added one more run to the board in the seventh when Sheaks singled to right field, advanced to second on a passed ball, took third on a ground ball to shortstop, and home on a ground to second base. The final 5-1 victory improved the Blue Demons to 13-2 in the all-time series with UH.

All told, the Cougars recorded three hits and the Demons recorded six.

Freshman Barbie Love, now 5-2, gave up five hits with four runs, including only two earned, in 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore Carla Kennimer gave up one run in one hit recorded in 1.1 innings pitched.

DePaul pitcher Megan Huitink recorded eight strikeouts, while allowing three hits with one run in her seven innings of work.

The Cougars will play a series with Eastern Carolina this weekend, with a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m. Friday and a single game at 11 a.m Saturday.
