Cougars finish in fifth place

Junior Kevin Newman ends the day tied for 8th place in tournament

The Cougar golf team competed in the first round of the Conference USA tournament Monday at the Grand Bear Golf Course in Gulfport, Miss. where Houston finished in fifth place after the first day.

The Cougars came into the 54-hole tournament in the par-72, 7,200-yard course after six top-five tournament finishes during the 2004-05 season that includes two team championship finishes in the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic and the Palmetto intercollegiate.

By the end of the day at the C-USA tourney, the Cougars shot a team score of 293, falling 15 strokes behind team leader Texas Christian who shot a 278.

Junior Kevin Newman led the Cougars after going 1-under-par with 71, which tied him for eighth place.

Three Cougars tied for 21st place after sophomores Pablo Acuna and Ricky Romano along with freshman Jordan Irwin fired 2-over-par with 74. Junior Zach Mowbray tied for 34th place posting 4-over-par with 76. 

Round 2 will be played today with the final round scheduled for Wednesday.
