Lady Cougar basketball faces tough opponents
Sam Khan, Jr.
A 14-game home schedule and four matchups against top-25 teams highlight the Houston Lady Cougars 2004-05 basketball schedule, released earlier this week.
The season will open with seven consecutive home games, including two exhibition games, the regular-season opener -- Nov. 19 vs. Wichita State -- and the Houston Classic against Wisconsin on Nov. 26.
Coming off a 28-4 record, the best in school history, the Lady Cougars will open up their road schedule with a challenge on Nov. 30 against Purdue. The Boilermakers ended their 2003-04 season with a 29-4 record, good for 9th in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 college basketball coaches' poll.
Houston, who ended 2004 ranked 16th, will kick off 2005 on Jan. 3 vs. New Mexico State, and will follow that game with their first Conference USA contest on Jan. 7 at New Orleans to face the Tulane Green Wave.
On Feb. 11, the Lady Cougars will travel to Chicago to play DePaul, who ended last season ranked 25th. The Lady Cougars defeated DePaul 84-75 at Hofheinz Pavilion last season.
The first rematch of the 2004 Conference USA championship game will take place at home in the Hofheinz Pavilion against the TCU Lady Frogs on Jan. 30. The Lady Cougars were 3-0 vs. the Lady Frogs last season, including the Conference USA Tournament Championship game which they claimed 86-75. The Lady Frogs, who ended 2004 ranked 22nd, will host the Lady Cougars' final regular season game in Fort Worth on Feb. 27.
After the regular season comes to an end, fans can also look for the Lady Cougars in the 2005 Conference USA Tournament, which will be held from Mar. 3 to Mar. 6 in Charlotte, N.C.
