Letters to the Editor
Anti-war not anti-American
To the editor:
I am disgusted with Tyler Nelson's stance in his recent article "Sheehan an ineffective tool for left" (Opinion, Aug. 29). Nelson's argument against Cindy Sheehan is as unfounded and ludicrous as Bush's foundation for the Iraqi occupation. His grandiose -- and irrelevant -- allusions to President Reagan and the Vietnam anti-war movement reflect an obtuse and regrettable perception of present anti-war sentiments. As absurd as the arguments presented were, I was appalled to read a sentence with the words anti-war and anti-American in it. Mr. Nelson should take note that being opposed to a pre-emptive, imperialistic invasion of a sovereign state that posed no imminent threat to United States' national security in no way reflects anti-Americanism.

Unite for relief
To the editor:
Here in Natchez, Miss., Hurricane Katrina's wrath wasn't much of an issue. Other than a few downed power lines, we were spared. There are, however, more than 5,000 evacuees in Natchez and thousands more in Concordia Parish just across the Mississippi River.
These people have no homes, few possessions, no way to go back to their homes and nothing to return to even if they could go home.
I urge the UH community to help with ongoing relief efforts. It will take years of effort and the help of people from across this country to help evacuees build new lives.
Give money, give your time, give anything you can.
Letters to the editor are welcome from all members of the UH community and should focus on issues, not personalities.
