Theater senior's 'Secret Place' offers drama, comedy
by KATIE HAMARICH
Secret Place will be performed at 8 p.m. tonight in the Jose Quintero Lab Theatre in the Wortham Theatre Building.
The play was written by theater and psychology senior Daryl Banner. Banner is a student in the Edward Albee Playwright Workshop, which was helmed this year by Lanford Wilson.
"It's really hard to describe the action of the plays that I write because I don't really write plays that have a lot of action. It's a lot more about revealing the relationships," Banner said.
In the play, the main character, played by John Dunn, has to deal with getting past an ex-lover while his brother and his girlfriend help him move into a new house. Kevin Holden directed the play.
"I have a great director who's been working really well with the actors," Banner said. "Reading the play as opposed to hearing it is totally different.
"When I wrote it, it was intended to be a lot more of a comedic drama, but it's coming off more like a dramatic comedy or a drama."
Banner is also acting in another play at the same time his play is being performed. He has had the challenge of both assisting in the development in Secret Place and acting in Fifteen Hours in the Green World.
"I've learned a lot as far as being an actor and
a director. I've had the chance to see both sides of the fields. Being
part of both shows in two different ways has been amplifying my understanding
of it," Banner said. "Being a playwright in one show is helping me be an
actor in the other show. It's a cool process, all the while learning what
I can from Lanford, which is a really great opportunity."
