Agassi leaves a lasting impression on tennis

Mark Suarez

Junior sprinter Ebonie Floyd capped off a season full of awards and accomplishments with a fourth-place finish Sunday in the 200-meter dash at the 2006 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Floyd finished with a time of 22.77, though she had advanced to the finals with a slightly faster 22.63, placing her third in the heat.

Teammate Seun Adigun also finished fourth in a finals race, running the 100-meter hurdles in the USA Junior Championships with a wind-aided time of 13.62 seconds. While advancing to the finals, Adigun finished the 100-meter hurdles with a career best of 13.59 seconds. Junior jumper Caresir Hamilton recorded a 13th-place finish in the women's triple jump with a leap of 12.53 meters.

On the men's side, UH sprinter Preston Perry advanced to the semifinals in the 200-meter dash, finishing the first round in 21.28 seconds, good enough for second place in his heat and eighth overall. In the semifinal round, Perry cut his time and completed the race in a time of 21.10 seconds to finish sixth in his heat.

Senior shot putter Lucas Mireles did not participate in the championships, but did receive an award for his combined success on the track and in the classroom. Mireles was named one of the recipients of the C-USA Postgraduate Scholarship Awards, a $4,000 award given annually to graduate students.

Mireles has successfully completed three seasons as a shot putter for Houston. This season he had three top-five finishes in the shot put and mustered a sixth-place finish in the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
