Lady Cougars begin '05-'06 season today

Cougar Sports Services

The women's basketball team will take the cold trip to the land of cheese and beer, looking for their first 2005-06 season win against the Wisconsin Badgers at 7 p.m. today.

In their quest for a third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, head coach Joe Curl and a team consisting of seven new players are confident they will be able to improve their all-time record against the Badgers to 2-1.

Though the team has lost four starters and eight letter winners since last year, newcomers such as freshman Jasmin Moore, of Langham Creek High School, will play an important role in the game.

Sophomore Ryan Meyers, who is coming off of a double-double in preseason, will attempt to carry that same intensity into the season opener. Freshmen Nakazi Glover and Sha'Ratta Hawkins will also see valuable minutes in their first collegiate non-conference game.

With a win tonight, the Cougars would move their all-time school record in season openers to 26-5, while also getting their fourth straight win over Big-Ten competition.

The Badgers are coming off of a 12-15 record last season. Though they were only 5-11 in conference play, Wisconsin boasts four returning starters. This includes sophomore Jolene Anderson, who averaged 17.8 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game as a freshman.

Houston is hoping for a repeat of their last meeting with Wisconsin, in which the Cougars outscored the Badgers 86-61. However, under the circumstances, the game might turn out to be much closer on the scoreboard.
