Student groups for 'sale' at Mart
50 groups expected to participate Wednesday at Cullen Family Plaza
By Ashley Anthony
About 50 organizations are expected to attend the Department of Campus Activities' Activities Mart Tuesday and work to increase its group's membership, Director of Campus Activities Zack Copeland said.
"We have (these marts) normally during orientation, but we were also able to have one at Cat's Back," Copeland said. "This is the general one for the campus."
The event is during class time, but Copeland said he does not think that will affect the amount of students who attend.
"We typically do have it during the middle of the day, so a lot of students will come between classes," Copeland said.
Greek organizations will be present at the Activities Mart to talk to students. Chi Omega sorority's vice president, business management senior Danielle Clark, said the organization's main focus is not to recruit for Chi Omega.
"We want to get girls interested in just going Greek and through formal recruitment with Pan Hellenic," Clark said.
Other organizations such as the Orientation Team, commonly known as the O-Team, had about 40 students sign their interest form at Cat's Back, a weeklong welcome-back celebration, and will continue to recruit.
"We're trying to increase the diversity of the team and find well-rounded people who want to be dedicated (members)," said corporate communications senior Chasity Edmond, assistant director of the O-Team.
The University's chapter of the NAACP will also attend the Activities' Mart.
"(The Activities Mart) really does get people interested and let them know that our organization exists," said sociology senior Ben Woods, the chapter's president. "We want to bring students into student activism and political life on and off campus."
The Activities Mart will include free ice cream and
will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Cullen Family Plaza.
