Luther's Bar-B-Q coming to UH
Limited locations on campus give students more meal options
by KATY UMAÑA
Students interested in having alternatives for meals on campus will soon have another on the way.
Luther's Bar-B-Q will be serving the UH community through satellite locations at the University Center on Tuesdays and the UC Satellite on Wednesdays beginning February 7 and 8.
The satellite locales will be Capeesh in the UC and Cranberry Farms in the Satellite. Each will operate during regular hours both days, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
University officials have not yet decided whether Luther's will be a permanent addition to the University's dining services.
"If we find that the concept is very popular with the students, we will continue this program," Sevelia Johnson, Marketing Programs Manager of UH Dining Services, said.
"Then we will evaluate it to see if it's something we want here long-term."
Both locations will be serving choices of sliced beef, chopped beef or turkey sandwiches for $4.25, and the Big Baker, a baked potato with all the trimmings for $3.55. Potato salad and beans will also be available.
Cougar Cash, MasterCard, Visa and cash will be accepted at both locations.
"We hope that it is something that the students on campus will really take advantage of because we know that barbecue is really popular here in Texas," Johnson said.
Luther's staff will be preparing the meals, while Aramark employees will continue to serve as cashiers.
"You don't normally see places like Luther's here. It's not common on college campuses. You see places like McDonald's on Elgin, Chick-fil-A and Taco Bell," mathematics freshman Kayela Shannon said.
But some students said the new food option is a welcome addition to the exiting dining choices on campus.
"It's a good idea, because there used to be a Harlon's BBQ on-campus, which I really enjoyed. It's a good alternative to fast food like pizza," consumer science and merchandising junior Melissa Pulido said. "Especially if you have to eat at the UC all the time."
Luther's Restaurants Inc., a Houston staple since 1975, has 10 Houston area locations, along with restaurants in Webster and Beaumont as well as Lafayette, La.
Though other Luther's operate through Aramark accounts in the Houston area, this will be the first Luther's Bar-B-Q at a university campus.
