Errors put brakes on Council elections

Votes that got through will be void; polls to reopen on Aug. 10

Cougar News Services

The Staff Council election has been postponed until Wednesday, Aug. 10 because of errors in the online ballot.

Online polls had opened at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, but after a typographical error and a missing name was discovered that morning, officials decided to reschedule the election, Information Technology System Analyst Karl Bernard said.

"It will give us a chance to get everything together and make sure we've had everything properly proofed and give people a chance to reset their schedules," he said.

Although three physical polling locations were also scheduled to open at 9 a.m. Aug. 3, staff members did not get a chance to use them.

"(The errors were) discovered before we opened the actual in-person voting polls," Bernard said. "The decision (to postpone the election) was actually made right about the time the in-person voting polls opened and we started making phone calls shortly after that."

Bernard said some staff members had already voted before the error was discovered, but she did not know how many.

"I'm going to try to contact those people and let them know that they can vote again, because basically all the counters and everything are going to be reset to zero, so it's just like new elections all over again," Bernard said.

Polls will open online Aug. 10 at from 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in three locations, including the first floor lobby of the E. Cullen Building.

A complete list of candidates, biographies and additional voting details can be found on the Staff Council Web site at

Only benefits-eligible staff members who have their employee identification numbers may vote.

"I certainly invite everyone to come out and vote, for Academic Affairs, especially. It's a highly contested race. There's 20-something people running for eight slots," Bernard said.
