Guava Lamp shines on H-Town

Bottoms Up

Sarah Tressler

The recent popularity of blockbuster Brokeback Mountain awakened me to a phenomenon I haven't touched on since I began writing Bottoms Up: the gay bar.

For a fabulous place to mingle with men who undoubtedly know how to dress better than anyone on the entire UH football team, we must turn our attention to Guava Lamp.

Guava calls to professional, fun-loving men and women from around the Memorial-Heights area. Its location just off Allen Parkway lends easy access to anyone who wants to visit from outlying locations.

Hip, sophisticated schmoozers line the bar and booths that encompass a bustling dance floor. A pool table in the back corner keeps busy those afflicted by attention deficit disorder. A living room-like setup is found opposite the pool table for those who prefer to lounge.

Several flat screen TVs are hung high on the walls so people can view the music videos that correspond with the songs being played. Wednesday nights are designated karaoke nights where you're bound to hear someone belt out his rendition of "Dancing Queen." Who could resist?

This is definitely a straight-friendly bar; in fact, you'd be surprised how friendly it can be. As a lady, I can say that being in a gay bar takes the pressure off meeting people, so conversations with strange men are much more comfortable than they usually are.

Some of you may still have an image of a gay bar as one filled with drag queens and muscle-bound men with no shirts and butt-less leather chaps. If that's what you happen to be looking for, please direct your attention to Mary's on Westheimer Road and Waugh Drive. We promise not to judge you.

But if you're out to have a good time with kick ass music and a trendy, well-dressed crowd, check out Guava Lamp.

You can leave your butt-less chaps at home.

Verdict: Fashionable crowd, friendly vibe and good music.
